6 Fun Mum-Approved Craft Recipes

As parents, we want the best for our children. We want them to be in the best learning environment and to have everything they need to explore their creativity. That means having the right arts and crafts supplies available when they need them. If we are out of a particular craft material such as play dough or finger paint, chaos could quickly ensue.

Keeping that in mind, we are going to take a look at some must-have recipes that every parent with small children needs to know should they run out of craft supplies mid-masterpiece. Let’s get started:

Soap Bubbles With Glycerine

  • 236ml water
  • 2 Tablespoon liquid detergent
  • 1 Tablespoon glycerine (you can choose a pretty colour if you wish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Mix all ingredients together in container with a lid. Shake well.

Best Play Dough Recipe

  • 680g flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2l water
  • 10-15 drops Food colouring
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla or peppermint extract

Mix all ingredients in saucepan.

Cook over low heat until it just begins to look dry.

Take out of pan and place on work surface.

When cool enough to touch, knead until smooth and pliable.

Basic Finger Paint

  1. 3 Tablespoons sugar
  2. 170 g cornstarch
  3. 1/2l cold water
  4. Food colouring

Mix sugar and cornstarch together in a saucepan.

Add cold water and stir completely.

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly about 5 minutes.

Cool, then divide into 4 cups or bowls.

Add food colouring to each bowl and stir.

Silly Putty

  • 236ml Elmer’s glue
  • 1/2l Cup liquid starch (or more)
  • Food colouring

In a bowl, mix glue and one cup of the starch together.

Stir in a few drops of food colouring. Cover bowl, and leave it to sit overnight.

The following day slowly stir in the starch until a big blob forms. Pour off extra starch.

Store in an airtight container.

Ooblick Recipe

  • 236ml water
  • 1 box of cornstarch
  • Green Food Colouring

Mix the ingredients together in bowl.

Spoon into plastic sandwich bags or jars.

Label items warning that this is messy.

Gak Recipe

  • 1/2l Elmer’s glue
  • 120ml water
  • 1 Tablespoon borax
  • 236ml hot water

Combine glue, water, and food colouring in a bowl.

Dissolve borax in hot water then slowly add to glue mixture.

Working quickly, drain off excess water.

Store in plastic bag or container with lid.
